The sequel to the Academy-Award winning film "Mary Poppins" has got a name and its stars to the film. "Mary Poppins Returns" will star Emily Blunt (Into the Woods) as Mary Poppins and Hamilton-star Lin-Manuel Miranda as a brand new character named, Jack. The film is scheduled to be released to theaters on Christmas Day 2018.
"Mary Poppins Returns" will be directed by Rob Marshall (Into the Woods) with the screenplay being based on The Mary Poppins Stories by P.L. Travers. The film will be written by David Magee (Life of Pi). More on Miranda's character Jack, who is described as street lamplighter.
The story is set to take place in Depression-era London and will follow a now grown-up Jane and Michael Banks and Michael's three children. Mary Poppins, their old nanny, will return to the family after a personal loss. Mary will return once again using her unique powers to help the family, "rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives."
Director Rob Marshall had this to say on the return of Mary Poppins and being selected to direct the sequel:
“I am truly humbled and honored to be asked by Disney to bring P.L. Travers’ further adventures to the screen. The iconic original film means so much to me personally, and I look forward to creating an original movie musical that can bring Mary Poppins, and her message that childlike wonder can be found in even the most challenging of times, to a whole new generation.""Mary Poppins Returns" will hit theaters December 25, 2018.
