Disney Quest to Close, Rasulo's Replacement Named, and Mickey Mouse Club to be Celebrated at D23

Disney Quest to Close:

Yesterday after news broke that The Magic of Disney Animation will be closing at Hollywood Studios, more news broke last night. Disney Quest, located in Downtown Disney, will be closing sometime next year as a date has yet to be announced. It will be closing to make room for the recently announced NBA Experience at Walt Disney World Resort also set to open next year.

Disney Quest opened in 1998 and was an indoor interactive theme park where guests would pay one fee to enter and be able to play all the games. Annual passes for Disney Quest as well as Water Park/Disney Quest combo passes are no longer available. Current attractions inside Disney Quest that are set to close are: CyberSpace Mountain, Buzz Lightyear's Astroblaster, Virtual Jungle Cruise, Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for Buccaneer Gold, Mighty Ducks Pinball Slam, Aladdin's Magic Carpet Ride, and Invasion! Extraterrestrial Alien Encounter.

Rasulo's Replacement Named: Christine M. McCarthy Named Chief Financial Officer:

As of today Jay Rasulo is no longer the CFO of The Walt Disney Company as he announced his resignation last month. Today, The Walt Disney Company and CEO and Chairman Bob Iger named Rasulo's successor as he named Christine M. McCarthy as Chief Financial Officer of the company. The company also named Kevin Mayer Chief Strategy Officer today.

Iger said in a statement on McCarthy, "Christine has done an incredible job as Disney's treasurer over the past 15 years, and her strong leadership and keen financial acumen make her an ideal Chief Financial Officer. She is highly respected in the finance sector,  and in this new role she will have even more impact on creating value for Disney shareholders."

McCarthy will now oversee Investor Relations, Corporate Planning and Control, Tax, Corporate Treasury, Corporate Real Estate, Facilities, Integrated Supply Chain Management, and Corporate Citizenship. She will report directly to Iger. She was most recently the Executive Vice President, Corporate Real Estate, Alliances and Treasurer where she developed a finance team responsible for treasury, corporate finance, capital markets, financial risk, international treasury and investments, credit, and risk management.

McCarthy said this in release, "I am humbled and honored to be entrusted with the role of CFO of this incredibly dynamic company. Under Bob's leadership, Disney has delivered record results, and I look forward to working with our talented senior management team as we build on the company's financial strength and strong balance sheet to deliver shareholder value."

Mr. Mayer has been the Executive Vice President, Corporate Strategy and Business Development since 2005. In his new role as Chief Strategy Officer he will oversee Corporate Strategy, Business Development, Acquisitions, Enterprise Information Technology, Innovation, Brand and Franchise Management, and Global Corporate Alliances. Mr. Mayer will report jointly to Mr. Iger and Tom Staggs, COO of Disney.

Igor said in the statement release on Mayer, "Kevin has overseen Corporate Strategy and Business Development at a time of unprecedented growth for Disney, playing an integral role in our successful acquisitions of Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilms. With this promotion to the new role of Chief Strategy Officer he will continue to focus on growth opportunities and help position the company for the future."

In the release Mayer also released a statement saying, "I'm extremely gratified to be given this opportunity to further expand Disney's assets and businesses. Disney's growth has been incredible these past several years, and I am proud of the role my group has played in facilitating that expansion and excited by the strategic opportunities that lie ahead for the company."

Disney Consumer Products and Disney Interactive to Combine, List of Allowable Camera Accessories, and More

Disney Consumer Products and Disney Interactive to Combine into One Division:

In news breaking today Disney Consumer Products and Disney Interactive are going to combine into one single division to be named Disney Consumer Products & Interactive Media. The reasoning behind the conversion of the two divisions is increasing overlap of both consumer and interactive products. The new division will be headed by the two previous heads of the divisions, Jillian Ferraro who became president of Consumer Products back in May, and Jimmy Pitaro the current president of Disney Interactive.

In the statement released by Disney, Disney COO Thomas Staggs stated: As technology and digital entertainment continue to evolve, a shared innovation strategy will enable this new segment to create unique and engaging products and experiences that exceed customers' expectations.

The development of Disney Interactive's Disney Infinity video game had helped the division become profitable. It operated at a $116 million profit last year, where as recently as 2011 the division had a reported $308 million loss. Disney Consumer Products unveiled its newest product earlier this month in Playmation which is a line of wearable toys that use radio waves and other technologies to interact with each other. Sales for Disney Consumer Products last year rose 12 percent to $4 billion. Now seems the perfect time for these two divisions to combine.

Disney Releases List of Allowable Guest Camera Accessories in Time for Upcoming Ban on Selfie Sticks:

Last week it was reported that selfie sticks would be banned from all Disney Theme Parks effective tomorrow, June 30, 2015. Guests have been worried that camera accessories similar to selfie sticks would not be allowed into the park either. Here is a list released by Disney of camera accessories that are and aren't allowed into the park:

  • Tripods that can be folded and stored in a reasonable size bag are allowed. Large tripods are not allowed.
  • Extendable camera monopods are allowed.
  • GoPro brand name body and head harnesses are allowed.
  • Short, brand name GoPro handles are allowed.

More Details  The Magic of Disney Animation Closing at Hollywood Studios:

Last week it was reported on the possibility that The Magic of Disney Animation at Hollywood Studios would be closing in part of the intended massive makeover project at the park. The closing of The Magic of Disney Animation will be July 12, 2015 as reported by Cast Members. It was also discovered on the My Disney Experience app that the last day for the character meet & greets in the area would be ending on July 18, 2015.

Although no word has been announced by Disney of the closing of any of the other attractions in the area this is just the one of many signs of the impending closing. One Man's Dream is also expected to be closing around the date of the meet & greets.

UPDATE: With the confirmation of the closing of The Magic of Disney Animation here are some details of what will happen to the area. The Hiro and Baymax meet & greet will be ending and Minnie Mouse will be moving to the central hub of the park in front of the Chinese Theater with other characters. Mickey Mouse is moving to a new home across from the Studio Catering Company. The Animation Gallery store at the exit of the attraction will remain open until August.

It still remains unclear however if any of the parts of the attraction will be returning or if the area is destined for demolition. Rumors have not had this part of the park set for any kind of expansion of the park, but that may have changed. This is now the second major area of the park that is closing ( the other the Backlot Tour last fall) in what seems to be a major expansion of Hollywood Studios not yet announced by Disney. Tune in as this story of what could be a very large expansion to Disney's Hollywood Studios develops.

Selfie Sticks Banned from Disney Theme Parks

Selfie Sticks to be Banned at Disney Theme Parks:

Guests recently saw an imposed ban on selfie sticks on Disney theme park attractions. Now, Disney is banning them throughout the parks as a whole effective this Monday, June 30, 2015. They were banned from attractions due to safety concerns the sticks posed when brought onto the attractions. Guest Relations cast members will assist security cast as they will be assigned to security screening areas to help assist in stopping selfie sticks from getting into the parks.

If found guests will be able to leave with the sticks and take them back to their resort or guests can leave it with a guest relations cast member who will give the guests a ticket so they could collect it as they leave the park.

The ban comes just days after a guest snuck a selfie stick onto California Screamin' in Disney's California Adventure. Cast members stopped the ride and it resumed shortly thereafter. However according to Twitter reports, guests had to be evacuated from the ride before it could be restarted. Selfie Sticks will be banned from all Disney Theme Parks including Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Hong Kong Disneyland, and Disneyland Paris.

Breaking: Disney Wants to Invest $1 Billion at Disneyland and California Adventure; Pixar Announces D23 EXPO Schedule and more

Breaking: Disney Wants to Invest $1 Billion at Disneyland and California Adventure:

In an article just posted by The OC Register, Disney wants to invest $1 billion at Disneyland and California Adventure in exchange for no new gate tax. At this point the company is seriously considering the deal which would bring new attractions, a 5,000 slot parking structure, and massive improvements to streets surrounding the theme park. Disney officials said they don't know whether yet if they improvements would come to one of the parks or even both but they do know that their won't be a third park opening in Anaheim. In exchange for the investment into the parks, Disney wants the city of Anaheim to not levy taxes on admission tickets at the theme parks for another 30 years, according to sources.

The City Council of Anaheim will be holding a public hearing on July 7 to consider extending the current tax exemption agreement that started in 1996 and is set to expire June 30, 2016. Michael Colglazier, president of Disneyland, said: "Anaheim has been an economic success story thanks to its policies and initiatives that allow businesses to invest and thrive. We are asking city leaders to continue with a policy set two decades ago that has driven unprecedented job creation, growth and prosperity, and enabled the city to invest in vital services that benefit every Anaheim resident."

Disney officials don't even know what new attractions, themed lands, or any other details on what would be coming but said that construction would begin no later than 2017. Disney has plenty of options since it owns the Star Wars, Marvel, and Pixar franchises. If the ticket-tax exemption is approved Disney said the announcement on the expansion could be announced by December. Disney Chairman Bob Iger has told shareholders earlier this year about the plans to expand the Disneyland Resort. In other calls, he also stated that "Star Wars" attractions for Disney theme parks are being worked on by Imagineers.

The last expansion at Disney's California Adventure ended in 2012 and cost more the $1 billion. Tune in for more news on the expansion of the Disneyland Resort as this story develops.

The Disney Parks Blog today showed off what's new at the Wilderness Lodge at its premier restaurant Artist Point. Chef Michael Gonsalves is the new chef at the helm and is bringing the theme of the hotel, the Pacific Northwest, to the menu at Artist Point. He said, "We are looking to convey the wonders of nature through food."

Regional dishes like the Dungeness crab cakes steamed mussels, Cedar plank salmon, wild-caught prawns, and halibut remain on the menu but Chef Michael is bringing in new tastes too. A dashi-braised short rib starter is served with kombu turnip pickles, daikon, and wild greens. Also a charred field asparagus with prosciutto, mustard vinaigrette, and foraged greens will be featured on the menu. Chef Michael will also showcase produce from the "Land" at Epcot as well with offerings such as the "Land" Greens Salad featuring Masumoto Peaches and Seed Granola.

New to the menu will be a cheese and charcuterie board. Chef Michael said this, "We'll be offering Pacific Northwest cheeses with house-made lavosh and crostini. And the house-made charcuterie will be 'nose-to-tail' using the whole hog." The restaurants popular dishes featuring beef, bison, halibut, and salmon are all sourced from the Pacific Northwest as well. The most popular dish on the menu, the Cedar plank salmon, will have some new additions as it will be paired with local potatoes, baby fennel, and Florida citrus and ver jus.

Also ahead for the restaurant, Chef Michael hopes to add a terrace dining experience with a communal chef's table. The Disney Parks Blog says stay tuned for details.

Animal Kingdom to Test New Access to The Oasis:

WDWMagic is reporting that Disney's Animal Kingdom will be testing a new access to The Oasis before park opening beginning next week. The test will allow guests on non-Extra Magic Hour days to enter The Oasis area of the park 30 minutes before the park opens.

The early entry will allow guests to plan their day with Cast Member assistance, and make any last minute Fastpass + reservations. No attractions will be open at the time as guests will be limited to the entrance and The Oasis area of the park. This will allow less congestion as their have been frequent long lines to enter the park. The test will run through the end of July.

Disney Legend Mary Blair Gets French Animated Tribute:

The Annecy Animation Festival debuted a new animation short from French animation studio, Gobelins, about Disney legendary artist, Mary Blair. The short is just 86 seconds long and conveys the work of Blair so well. Here is the synopsis from the studio on the short called, "Mary":

"Mary Blair is hired to work in Walt Disney's gigantic and rigorously maintained garden. As he welcomes her and invites her to get to work, she starts producing plants magically. Although he is amazed, Walt cannot refrain from correcting and toning down Mary's work behind her back."

Mary Blair was a real pioneer in animation, illustration, and imagineering at a time when the field was dominated by men. Most known for her works in the "Alice in Wonderland" animated feature, the monorail lobby in Disney's Contemporary Resort, and her work on the It's A Small World attraction. Here is the short:

4th of July Festivities at Disney World, Dining Plan Prices for 2016, and Rumors of The Magic of Disney Animation Closing

First off I want to say I'm sorry for the lack of blogs the last few days. I decided not to post anything on Friday after a long week. Then I had the wind knocked out of me on Saturday when I woke up with a pulled muscle in my back. This completely knocked me out of doing anything the whole weekend. I tried yesterday but I just could not begin to think about sitting down to write a blog. Today I feel a little bit better after working so hopefully we will be back to our normal schedule now.

4th of July Festivities Announced for Walt Disney World:

The 4th of July is next Saturday and Walt Disney World today announced its plans for the upcoming patriotic holiday. It will be a 2-day celebration of our nation's Independence Day starting July 3 with themed souvenirs, characters adorned in festive attire, and of course fireworks bursting in the air. The patriotic firework displays will light up the sky in the evenings of July 3rd and 4th.

On both nights at the Magic Kingdom guests will be able witness a 14-minute firework spectacular will rocket into the air above Cinderella Castle at 10 p.m. called "Disney's Celebrate America! A Fourth of July Concert in the Sky." At Disney's Hollywood Studios, the "Coolest Summer Ever" dance party will lead into the "Rockin' Fourth of July Celebration" fireworks show, a pyrotechnic, rock 'n roll trip across America, where the DJ will kick things off at 5:45 p.m. with the party going until the fireworks set off at 10:15 p.m. At Epcot Illuminations will have a special red, white, and blue finale at 9 p.m. on both nights.

Epcot will have additional fanfare on the 4th with the Voices of Liberty performing a Fourth of July concert at the America Gardens Theatre at 12:30, 1:45, and 3 p.m. as well as in the American Adventure pavilion at 4:15 and 5 p.m. The Sounds Like Summer concert series will continue at the American Gardens Theatre with "Don't Look Back - A Boston Tribute band" will have performances at 5:15, 6:30, 7:45, and 9 p.m. Special patriotic character greeting will be available throughout the day. At the Walt Disney World Resorts guests will be treated to patriotic poolside activities including Fourth of July-themed crafts and games, pool parties, and movies under the stars at select Walt Disney World resorts.

Walt Disney World Announced Prices for it Dining Plan in 2016:

The 2016 Disney Dining Plan prices have been released and there are slight increases to all the plans. Here are the details:
  • Quick Service Dining Plan: $42.77/night for adults, previously $41.99 and $17.54/night for children ages 3-9, previously $16.03
  • Regular Dining Plan: $61.82/night for adults, previously $60.64, and $20.98 per child, previously $19.23
  • Deluxe Dining Plan: $111.73/night for adults, previously $109.53, and $32.56 for children, previously $29.86.
Rumor: The Magic of Disney Animation to Close at Disney's Hollywood Studios:

In an article today by WDW News Today, reported a rumor that The Magic of Disney Animation is set to close at Disney's Hollywood Studios. It will be closing for major changes to the area. Rumor is that it will close in a few weeks time leaving the park without the "Mushu film," the Animation Academy, and the character meet & greets throughout the area. The Incredibles meet & greet has already been moved out and beed replaced by a Doc McStuffin's meet & greet in the Disney Junior area of the park.

In the new space the Animation Academy would return in a new and expanded space with possible multiple theaters to help with the ever-expanding guests wanting to learn how to draw. Details on the rest of the space remain unclear and sketchy the article says. Maybe Joy and Sadness from "Inside Out" will get a meet & greet in the area. The only solid information the article states is that the space will be closing very soon and that it has to do with the rumored expansion of Disney's Hollywood Studios. This will be a park-capacity change that will help handle the crowds during the periods of heavy construction.

"Maleficent" Sequel, Extra Magic Hours Ending?, Walt Disney World Speedway to be Demolished, and More

Maleficent Sequel in the Works:

A sequel to last year's hit Disney live-action film "Maleficent" is being scripted. Disney has hired the hit film's screenwriter Linda Woolverton, to return and write the film.

The studio is also hoping for Angelina Jolie to return as the star and has been keeping her in the loop in hopes that she will sign on as the evil dragon. Last year's hit film made $758.4 million worldwide in a slow box office year.

The first film had told the story of Disney's animated classic of "Sleeping Beauty." There is no word what the second film will be about as of yet.

Could Extra Magic Hours be Ending Next Year?:

In provisional hours for 2016 for the Walt Disney World Resort sent to travel agents this week there seemed be something missing. Extra Magic Hours have been left off for next year's park hours. Extra Magic Hours have been an extra benefit for guests staying on-site and select Downtown Disney resorts, allowing guests to enter the park an extra hour early or several hours later.

This allowed on-sites guests to see lower crowds during Extra Magic Hours because off-site guests aren't able to enter the park at those times. This is obviously still in the rumor stage as the provisional hours simply could just not have the Extra Magic Hours on them and they will be added later. Stay tuned on if Extra Magic Hours are really ending in the new year.

Walt Disney World Speedway to be Demolished for Expansion of TTC Parking Lot:

Disney has filed plans to demolish the Walt Disney World Speedway to expand Magic Kingdom's Ticket and Transportation Center parking lot according to WDWMagic

After announcing back in February that the Richard Petty Driving Experience and the Exotic Driving Experience would be closing later this year, speculation began about what would happen to the Walt Disney World Speedway. We now know that the speedway will be demolished to make way for an expansion of the Ticket and Transportation Center's parking lot. Since the addition of New Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom, the TTC has experienced problems with reaching capacity before the parks even reach capacity. This should and will alleviate the issue.

Disney has already started roadway improvements around the area with a project to add traffic lights in areas that are frequently congested by the parking area.

Boba Fett is Coming to Disney Infinity 3.0:

In an announcement by Disney Interactive, Lucasfilm, and Sony at E3, it was announced last night that Boba Fett will be joining his Star Wars counterparts in Disney Infinity 3.0 as part of a new limited edition offering. Boba Fett will be a part of the "Star Wars" Saga Starter Pack for both the Playstation 4 and Playstation 3 consoles exclusively. It will be the only place fans can play as the character through the holidays and will also allow fans to get the Star Wars Rise Against the Empire Play Set nearly a month early.

Boba Fett is one of the most feared bounty hunters in the galaxy, and will use his martial arts skills and blaster rifle to help the Galactic Empire hunt and track down prey. He will be instantly playable in the new Disney Infinity 3.0 Toy Box and will be unlockable in all of the Star Wars Play Sets.

The limited edition Star Wars Saga Starter Pack for both PlayStation consoles will be sold at retail for $114.99. The set will include:
  • Disney Infinity 3.0 edition game software
  • Star Wars Twilight of the Republic Play Set piece, Ahsoka Tano figure, Anakin Skywalker figure
  • Star Wars Rise of the Empire Play Set piece, Luke Skywalker figure, Princess Leia figure
  • Boba Fett figure
  • Disney Infinity 3.0 edition base
  • Web Code Card (unlocks content for pc/mobile)
The game is rated E10+ and will be available this fall.
